self-education

Learning without teachers

Self-education is learning pursued independently, outside formal schooling or instruction.

Someone who is self-educated has acquired knowledge or skills through their own initiative—reading, practice, experimentation—rather than through teachers or institutions: Lincoln was largely self-educated, reading law books by candlelight.

The term often carries connotations of admirable initiative and autodidactic rigor.
