academician

Elected scholarly expert

An academician is a member of an academy, particularly a prestigious learned society like the French Academy or the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The term carries more weight in European and international contexts than in American English, where it can simply mean an academic—someone who works in higher education or scholarly research.

The academicians voted to admit three new members.
