free school
No-cost public education
A free school is a school that charges no tuition, or one operating outside conventional educational structures with informal, student-directed learning.
In the UK, free schools are state-funded but independently run, free from local authority control.
In the US, the term often evokes the alternative education movement of the 1960s and 70s: The free school let kids choose what to study.
