abaca
Philippine banana plant
Abaca is a plant native to the Philippines, related to the banana.
Its fibers, extracted from leaf stalks, produce a strong, durable material used for rope, paper, and textiles.
The fiber itself is often called Manila hemp, though abaca is not a true hemp: Abaca rope resists saltwater damage better than most natural fibers.
