Ted Kennedy
Ted Kennedy (1932–2009) was a U.S.
Senator from Massachusetts who served for nearly 47 years, one of the longest tenures in Senate history.
The youngest brother of President John F.
Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy, he became a leading voice for liberal causes—healthcare reform, civil rights, and labor protections.
His 1969 car accident at Chappaquiddick, in which a young woman drowned, shadowed his career and derailed his 1980 presidential bid.
Often called the "Lion of the Senate" for his legislative effectiveness and booming oratory.
