Mitch McConnell

Mitch McConnell is an American politician who served as U.S.

Senator from Kentucky beginning in 1985 and as Senate Republican leader from 2007 to 2025—the longest-serving party leader in Senate history.

Known for procedural mastery and strategic obstruction, he blocked Merrick Garland's Supreme Court nomination in 2016 and shepherded three conservative justices onto the Court during Trump's presidency.

His name often appears as shorthand for Republican legislative strategy: McConnell killed the bill in the Senate.
