interleukins

Leukocyte signaling proteins

Interleukins are a group of proteins that regulate immune responses by signaling between white blood cells.

They coordinate inflammation, fever, and the body's defense against infection.

Numbered sequentially as they were discovered (IL-1, IL-2, etc.), different interleukins have distinct functions—some promote immune activity, others suppress it.

Elevated interleukin levels indicate an active immune response.
