biologic
Body-made therapeutic agent
A biologic is a medical product derived from living organisms rather than synthesized chemically—vaccines, blood products, gene therapies, and monoclonal antibodies are biologics.
The term distinguishes these complex molecules from traditional pharmaceuticals: Her doctor recommended a biologic for the rheumatoid arthritis.
As an adjective, biologic is a variant of biological, though the noun sense now dominates in medical contexts.
