refuseniks

Exit-blocked Soviet Jews

Refuseniks were Soviet Jews denied permission to emigrate, particularly to Israel, during the Cold War.

The term combines "refuse" with the Russian suffix -nik.

By extension, refusenik now describes anyone who refuses to comply with a system or requirement: The vaccine refuseniks held out despite mandates.

The word carries a note of stubborn principle, whether admiring or critical.
