Skylab

America's inaugural station

Skylab was the United States' first space station, launched in 1973 and occupied by three successive crews before being abandoned in 1974.

It reentered Earth's atmosphere in 1979, scattering debris over Western Australia.

The name occasionally serves as shorthand for ambitious but short-lived projects: Their startup was a Skylab—impressive launch, spectacular crash.
