Schopenhauer
Will-focused German thinker
Arthur Schopenhauer was a 19th-century German philosopher known for his pessimistic worldview and the idea that human existence is driven by an irrational, blind force he called "the Will." His major work, *The World as Will and Representation*, influenced later thinkers from Nietzsche to Freud.
In casual use, invoking Schopenhauer often signals a darkly philosophical or fatalistic perspective: Reading Schopenhauer in my twenties made me insufferable at parties.
