fellow-feeling

Emotional common ground

Fellow-feeling is sympathy or empathy—the capacity to share in another's emotions or experiences.

It suggests emotional kinship, understanding someone's situation because you've been there yourself: There was an immediate fellow-feeling among the survivors.

The term is somewhat old-fashioned but captures a warmth that "empathy" lacks.
