Rupert's Land

Fur trade domain

Rupert's Land was a vast territory in British North America granted to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670, named for Prince Rupert of the Rhine.

It encompassed the entire drainage basin of Hudson Bay—roughly a third of present-day Canada.

The company held trading rights there for two centuries until the land was transferred to the new Dominion of Canada in 1870.
