Indian Territory

Tribal lands, historically

Indian Territory was the federal designation for lands in present-day Oklahoma set aside for Native American tribes, particularly those forcibly relocated during the 1830s.

The territory shrank steadily as the U.S. government opened more land to white settlement, finally dissolving when Oklahoma became a state in 1907.

His grandfather was born in Indian Territory before statehood.
