Jacques Cartier

Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who made three voyages to North America in the 1530s and 1540s, claiming what is now Canada for France.

He explored the St.

Lawrence River and gave Canada its name, derived from a Huron-Iroquois word for village.

His expeditions established French claims in the New World though he failed to find the Northwest Passage he sought.
