Metis

Zeus's first wife

Metis is a Greek goddess of wisdom and cunning counsel, the first wife of Zeus and mother of Athena.

Zeus swallowed her to prevent a prophecy that her children would surpass him.

The name means wisdom or skill, particularly the practical, crafty intelligence needed to navigate complex situations—resourcefulness rather than pure intellect.

In Canadian usage, Métis refers to people of mixed Indigenous and European ancestry, particularly descendants of First Nations and French Canadian unions in western Canada. (The Canadian sense takes an accent: Métis.)
