Louisiana Territory
Jefferson's massive purchase
The Louisiana Territory was the vast region of North America that France sold to the United States in 1803, roughly doubling the young nation's size.
Stretching from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border, it encompassed all or part of fifteen present-day states.
The purchase, negotiated under President Thomas Jefferson for about fifteen million dollars, ranks among the most consequential land acquisitions in history.
