Redline

Maximum engine speed

Redline refers to a critical limit not to be exceeded.

In engines, the redline is the maximum safe RPM, marked in red on tachometers: Don't redline the engine.

In housing, to redline is to deny services to certain neighborhoods based on demographics—a discriminatory practice outlawed but historically devastating to minority communities.

As a verb in editing, to redline a document is to mark it up with proposed changes, from the red ink traditionally used: Legal redlined the contract.
