redlined

Crossed through text

Redlined describes something marked with red lines for revision or rejection: The editor returned the redlined manuscript.

In automotive contexts, an engine that's redlined is running at maximum RPM, near the danger zone marked in red on the tachometer: He redlined the car through every gear.

The term also refers to the discriminatory practice of denying services—especially mortgages and insurance—to residents of certain neighborhoods, originally marked in red on maps: Banks redlined minority neighborhoods for decades.
