Quercus
Genus of oaks
Quercus is the genus comprising all oak trees, containing several hundred species distributed across the Northern Hemisphere.
The word appears in binomial nomenclature—Quercus alba is the white oak, Quercus robur the English oak.
Botanists, foresters, and naturalists use the term when species-level precision matters: Several Quercus species are threatened by sudden oak death syndrome. (Lowercase quercus is the Latin common noun for oak.)
