Homo
Our taxonomic classification
Homo is the biological genus that includes modern humans (Homo sapiens) and our extinct relatives such as Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis.
The genus name comes from Latin for "man" or "human being." In scientific contexts, it's always italicized and capitalized: Homo habilis used stone tools over two million years ago. (Lowercase homo is a slur for homosexual.)
