Pledge

Word of honor

A pledge is a serious promise or commitment: a pledge of allegiance, a campaign pledge to lower taxes.

It also refers to something given as security for a debt or obligation—you pledge collateral for a loan.

In American universities, a pledge is someone in the trial period before full fraternity or sorority membership.

To pledge is to make such a promise or commitment: They pledged to support each other.
