People's Republic
Socialist nation title
People's Republic is a title adopted by communist or socialist states to signal that power theoretically belongs to the people rather than a monarch or elite: the People's Republic of China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The term emerged in the mid-twentieth century as Soviet-aligned governments established themselves.
Critics note the irony that many such states are authoritarian in practice.
