central committee

Party's ruling core

A central committee is the governing body of a communist or socialist party, holding power between party congresses.

The term comes from Soviet political structure, where the Central Committee of the Communist Party directed national policy.

Today it appears most often in discussions of Chinese politics: The central committee approved the five-year plan.
