Roald Amundsen

First Antarctic arrival

Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer who led the first expedition to reach the South Pole in 1911, beating Robert Scott's British team by about five weeks.

He also led the first successful navigation of the Northwest Passage and was likely the first to reach the North Pole by air.

Amundsen disappeared in 1928 during an Arctic rescue mission.

His name represents meticulous polar expedition planning: He prepared for the trek with Amundsen-like thoroughness.
