Strait of Magellan

South American channel

The Strait of Magellan is a navigable sea passage at the southern tip of South America, separating the mainland from Tierra del Fuego.

Named for the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who traversed it in 1520 during the first circumnavigation of the globe, the strait provided a route between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans before the Panama Canal: Ships braved the Strait of Magellan rather than rounding Cape Horn.
