South Vietnam

Cold War ally

South Vietnam was a country in Southeast Asia that existed from 1955 to 1975, formed after the partition of Vietnam following French colonial rule.

Supported by the United States during the Vietnam War, it fell to communist North Vietnam in 1975, and the two were reunified as Vietnam.

The term now refers to the southern region of unified Vietnam: My grandmother fled South Vietnam before the fall of Saigon.
