submarine volcano

Seafloor magma vent

A submarine volcano is a volcano that forms and erupts beneath the ocean surface.

Most occur along mid-ocean ridges where tectonic plates diverge, though some form over hotspots.

Eruptions at great depths produce little disturbance at the surface, but shallower ones can create steam explosions, tsunamis, or new islands.

The Hawaiian Islands began as submarine volcanoes.
