Rainbow flag letters
LGBT is an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender—an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities.
The initialism has expanded over time: LGBTQ adds queer or questioning, LGBTQIA+ adds intersex, asexual, and a plus sign acknowledging further identities.

The term emerged in the 1990s as activists sought inclusive language.
