non-binary
Gender outside two categories
Non-binary describes a gender identity that doesn't fit neatly into the categories of man or woman.
A non-binary person may identify as both, neither, or somewhere in between.
The term emerged alongside growing recognition that gender exists on a spectrum rather than as a strict binary.
Non-binary individuals often prefer the pronoun "they": My friend came out as non-binary last year.
