Northanger Abbey

Satirical Gothic tale

Northanger Abbey is an 1817 novel by Jane Austen, published posthumously.

It satirizes Gothic fiction through its young heroine Catherine Morland, whose imagination—fed by novels like *The Mysteries of Udolpho*—leads her to suspect dark secrets at the titular estate.

The title also refers to the fictional abbey itself: They finally received an invitation to Northanger Abbey.
