misunderstanding

Failed mutual comprehension

A misunderstanding is a failure to interpret something correctly.

Two people may have a misunderstanding when each takes the other's words differently than intended: It was just a misunderstanding—I thought you meant next Tuesday.

The word sometimes euphemizes deeper conflicts: calling a bitter dispute a misunderstanding minimizes it.
