Nez Perce

Idaho indigenous nation

Nez Perce refers to an Indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest, historically inhabiting regions of present-day Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

The name, French for "pierced nose," was applied by early traders, though the people call themselves Nimiipuu.

The term also designates their Sahaptin language: She studies Nez Perce linguistics.

The Nez Perce War of 1877, in which Chief Joseph led a famous retreat, remains central to their history.
