Osage
Oklahoma indigenous people
Osage refers to a Native American people originally from the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys, later centered in present-day Oklahoma.
The Osage Nation became famously wealthy after oil was discovered on their reservation in the early twentieth century—wealth that led to a notorious series of murders.
Osage also names their Siouan language and the Osage orange, a thorny tree with large, inedible fruit native to their traditional territory.
