Hemlock

New York lake

Hemlock refers to several poisonous plants, most famously the one used to execute Socrates in ancient Athens.

The poison hemlock is an herbaceous plant with white flowers, deadly when ingested.

Water hemlock is similarly toxic.

Confusingly, hemlock also names a group of coniferous evergreen trees unrelated to the poisonous plants—hemlocks in this sense are valued for timber and ornamental use.
