poison hemlock

Socrates' fatal drink

Poison hemlock is a tall plant with white flower clusters and fern-like leaves, native to Europe but widespread in North America.

All parts are highly toxic—ingestion causes respiratory paralysis and death.

It famously killed Socrates, who drank a hemlock preparation as his execution.

Not related to the hemlock tree, which is a conifer.
