western hemlock

Coastal shade tree

Western hemlock is a large evergreen conifer native to the Pacific Northwest, from Alaska to northern California.

It thrives in cool, moist coastal forests and is valued for its timber, used in construction and paper production.

The tree has short, flat needles and small cones, and serves as the state tree of Washington.

Not to be confused with poison hemlock, an unrelated toxic plant.
