hemlock trees
Graceful feathery evergreens
Hemlock trees are evergreen conifers of the genus *Tsuga*, native to North America and Asia.
They have short, flat needles and small cones, and grow in cool, moist forests.
Eastern hemlock and western hemlock are the most common North American species.
The trees are unrelated to poison hemlock, the toxic plant that killed Socrates—the name transferred because crushed hemlock foliage has a similar smell.
