HD DVD

Blu-ray's fallen rival

HD DVD was a high-definition optical disc format that competed with Blu-ray from 2006 to 2008.

Backed by Toshiba, it offered similar capacity and quality to its rival but lost the format war when major studios and retailers chose Blu-ray.

The format is now obsolete, its players and discs collector's items.
