region code
Geographic licensing restriction
A region code is a digital lock embedded in DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and video game software that restricts playback to devices sold in specific geographic areas.
The system divides the world into numbered regions—typically six for DVDs—so that a disc purchased in Europe won't play on a player bought in North America.
Studios use region coding to control release timing and pricing across different markets, though many consumers view it as an inconvenience that drives demand for region-free players.
