standard definition
Official established interpretation
Standard definition refers to video resolution of approximately 480 vertical lines (NTSC) or 576 lines (PAL)—the broadcast quality that preceded high definition.
The term emerged retroactively once sharper formats arrived: The old DVDs look grainy now that we're used to HD.
Abbreviated SD.
Standard definition also describes any baseline or default specification against which enhanced versions are measured.
