H1N1
2009 viral outbreak
H1N1 is a subtype of influenza A virus, named for the specific proteins on its surface (hemagglutinin type 1, neuraminidase type 1).
The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic was caused by an H1N1 strain, as was the 2009 "swine flu" outbreak.
In casual use, H1N1 often refers specifically to the 2009 pandemic strain: Schools closed during the H1N1 outbreak.
