influenza A
Common winter sickness
Influenza A is the most common and severe type of influenza virus, responsible for seasonal flu epidemics and occasional pandemics.
Unlike influenza B, which infects only humans, influenza A circulates in birds, pigs, and other animals, allowing new strains to emerge through genetic mixing.
Subtypes are classified by surface proteins: H1N1 caused the 1918 and 2009 pandemics, H3N2 drives many seasonal outbreaks.
She tested positive for influenza A.
