reassortment

Segment exchange process

Reassortment is the mixing of genetic material from different virus strains when they infect the same cell, producing new combinations.

This process drives the emergence of novel influenza strains: The pandemic strain arose through reassortment between bird and human flu viruses.

Unlike gradual mutation, reassortment can produce dramatic genetic shifts in a single event.
