swine flu

Hog-derived illness

Swine flu is an influenza virus that originated in pigs and spread to humans, causing a global pandemic in 2009.

The term became shorthand for that outbreak specifically, though the virus (H1N1) continues to circulate seasonally: Schools closed during the swine flu outbreak.

The name led to unfounded fears about eating pork.
