H3N2

Seasonal flu variant

H3N2 is a subtype of influenza A virus, identified by proteins on its surface: hemagglutinin type 3 and neuraminidase type 2.

It circulates seasonally in humans and is a common component of annual flu vaccines.

H3N2 strains tend to cause more severe illness than H1N1, particularly in the elderly.

The subtype also infects pigs and birds.
