God Bless America

Irving's patriotic hymn

God Bless America is a patriotic expression invoking divine favor on the United States.

Politicians routinely close speeches with it: And God bless America.

It also names Irving Berlin's 1918 song, which became an unofficial national anthem.

The phrase can be used ironically to comment on American excess or exceptionalism: God bless America, land of the free refill.
