Rule Britannia
British naval song
Rule Britannia is a British patriotic song celebrating naval power and national pride, with the refrain "Rule, Britannia!
Britannia, rule the waves." Written in 1740, it became an unofficial anthem of the British Empire.
The phrase now evokes British imperialism, used earnestly by nationalists or ironically by critics: The whole Rule Britannia mentality is outdated.
