flag waving
Showy patriotic gesture
Flag waving is ostentatious patriotism or nationalistic display, often with the implication of being excessive or hollow.
The term can describe actual waving of flags at rallies or parades, but more often refers to rhetoric or gestures meant to stir patriotic feeling: The speech was pure flag waving with no substance.
Sometimes hyphenated as flag-waving, especially when used as an adjective: flag-waving politicians.
