George Orwell

George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950), an English novelist and essayist whose work centered on political oppression and the corruption of language.

His novels *Nineteen Eighty-Four* and *Animal Farm* gave English enduring terms: Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, memory hole.

Orwellian describes surveillance, propaganda, or authoritarian control that distorts truth: The company's monitoring software felt distinctly Orwellian.
